Platform feeders
are the easiest feeders to make yourself and
attract a large range of species. They can be
mounted near the ground or higher up to attract
different species. You can make a simple platform
feeder by attaching a 1x4 or 1x6 board to a
mounting pole. The platform can be one to three
feet long or whatever your preferences are. The
board can be left in its natural state or stained
and sealed. It should be narrow so that birds do
not foul the feeding area.
This hanging platform feeder has a mesh screen
floor to aid in drainage.
One advantage of
the platform feeder is the variety of food that can
be provided. In addition to sunflower or other seed
you can offer chopped fruit, peanuts and raisins.
The variety of food will increase the variety of
species that visit your feeder.
Platform feeders
are easy to clean and maintain. If you have a
population of aggressive squirrels in your area
they can make a platform feeder difficult to keep
provided.
