Hopper feeders are
a popular feeder design that encourages use by a
wide variety of species. It allows easier access to
the feeding area than do tube feeders. The can be
more difficult to protect from squirrels if you
mounted to close to a tree or other launch point
(within 8 ft. of the feeder). Most are made of wood
and a couple of manufacturers use plastic lumbar to
provide long life and aid in recycling. Wooden
hopper feeders made from cedar weather better and
last longer than those made from pine and some
other woods.
You will probably
have greater success attracting species such as
cardinals with a hopper feeder than you will with a
tube feeder.
